Binary reflections mental models

Mental models are the frameworks that we use to understand the world around us and take better decisions.

1. One is infinitely better than zero

Don’t underestimate the power of one rep, one exercise session or one act of self-control. It has a cumulative effect and it builds up over time.

2. Environment is more powerful than your willpower

To practice sustainable self-control and discipline, changing the environment is much more reliable strategy than relying on your will power. Implement accountability systems. Create systems and processes. Create eustress.

3. Growth happens is quick, short bursts

Growth is non-linear. It happens in small, quick bursts. Your job is to keep putting efforts during plateaus.

4. Make hay while the sun shines

When growth is happening, don’t interrupt of question it. Make the most out of the opportunity while it lasts. Don’t worry too much about it getting over soon.

5. Dopamine is released in anticipation, not the reward

Dopamine is released BEFORE the action. After you get the reward, there is a dopamine crash. Your job is to try to extend the period of anticipation and enjoy that feeling.

6. Think in terms of marginal utility

Utility (enjoyment) diminishes over time. Same input can result in very less utility or even negative utility. Your job is to stop before the utility turns negative.

7. A moment of madness and a lifetime of regret

A single, impulsive action or decision can lead to disastrous consequences that can cause regret and remorse for life. Learn to recognize that moment of madness and control yourself during in that moment.

8. Quantity over quality

Done is better than perfect. Strive for progress, not perfection. Start doing, make mistakes and learn from your mistakes. Start worrying about quality only after your base case is covered. 20% planning and 80% doing. Aim for continuous improvement.

9. Enjoy the process, don’t worry about the outcomes

Make the process enjoyable and you won’t have to worry about the end goal. Enjoying the process will give you long-lasting happiness while the destination will only give you momentary pleasure.
